The trial process continues for the manager and members of the gang that trafficked newborn babies for unjust profit. In the hearing, nurse assistant Batuhan Çetin defended himself regarding the irregularities that occurred in the hospital and the death of the baby. Çetin stated, "When Kaya baby's condition worsened, I called Dr. Rıza Keykubat and said, 'I can't feel the pulse anymore.' He told me, 'If the baby is already 500 grams, let it go if it doesn't survive.'"
NEWBORN GANG MEMBERS IN FRONT OF THE JUDGE
The trial, which involves a total of 47 defendants, 22 of whom are in custody, continues on its 9th day. The defendants are members and managers of the Newborn Gang, which provided unjust profit by transferring babies to hospitals they had agreements with and caused their deaths through negligent behavior. The hearing, held in the conference hall of the Bakırköy 22nd High Criminal Court, included nurse assistant Batuhan Çetin, who was identified as having acted negligently in the death of Kaya baby, and he provided his defense.
"DOCTOR WOULD COME WHEN THERE WAS AN INSPECTION"
In his defense, Batuhan Çetin stated, "I am a nurse assistant. I was working in the neonatal intensive care unit at Güney Hospital. I had no knowledge of the irregularities that occurred. I knew that the neonatal intensive care unit was being operated as the whole hospital was aware. The hospital was informed before an inspection came. Normally, there was no doctor, but a doctor would come when there was going to be an inspection. Kaya baby was born at night. After the baby was born, no doctor intervened. They didn't even touch the baby. The baby was taken to intensive care. On the night of the second day, the baby was bleeding badly. It was bleeding due to aspiration. Nurse Damla Atak was informed, but she did not bother to come to the hospital. There were 3 nurse assistants present on the day the baby passed away," he said.
"IF IT'S 500 GRAMS, LET IT GO IF IT DOESN'T SURVIVE"
Defendant Çetin continued his defense, saying, "When we received the baby, it was very cold, and the monitor was not reading. The pulse was low. The baby was left to 3 nurse assistants at 18:00. I did not accept responsibility. Damla Atak told me, 'I'm leaving, I'm very tired, don't call me today.' She probably tried to keep the baby alive during the day so it wouldn't die at night. At night, I called Dr. Rıza Keykubat. He made a visit. Rıza Keykubat was also aware of the situation. The baby worsened around 03:00 at night. I called Keykubat and said, 'I can't feel the pulse anymore.' He told me, 'If the baby is already 500 grams, let it go if it doesn't survive.' To ease my conscience as a responsible person, I performed CPR. I did what could be done to keep the baby alive. I am currently being tried for this. I witnessed many things, but I am being tried as a defendant. Even if I hadn't performed CPR, the baby would have died, but I am being tried because I did CPR. Şeyhmus Hoca never saw the baby. He rarely comes to the neonatal unit. He is just a doctor who uses his stamp. After the baby died, the chief physician and head nurse took me to a room. They threatened me. Normally, there were cameras in the intensive care unit. I do not believe that there are no camera recordings. They must have destroyed them. Even the duty lists were false. They provided false duty lists to those who came for inspection. An inspection came after Kaya baby died. Damla Atak called me and said, 'You will say the doctor came and intervened.' I don't know how they knew about the upcoming inspection," he defended.
The hearing continues with the defense of the defendants who are not in custody.
