The death of a 13-year-old child receiving treatment at Ege University Medical Faculty Hospital in Izmir due to AIDS has caused an uproar. Speaking after the incident in Izmir, Prof. Dr. Ayper Somer claimed that there are 100 children being monitored for HIV positivity at Istanbul Medical Faculty. Somer also stated that 20 of these children are cases of sexually transmitted infections.

The death of a 13-year-old child in İzmir due to AIDS has caused public outrage, while the statements of a professor working at Istanbul Medical Faculty have further highlighted the severity of the situation.

CHILLING WORDS FROM THE PROFESSOR

Prof. Dr. Ayper Somer, the Head of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Department at Istanbul Medical Faculty, drew attention to the increase in child HIV cases in Turkey, stating that there are currently 100 children being monitored for HIV positivity at Istanbul Medical Faculty.

CHILDREN INFECTED THROUGH SEXUAL ABUSE

Somer expressed that 20 of these children are cases of sexually transmitted infections. Prof. Dr. Somer said, "In the past, we had very few cases like this. But in the last 5-6 years, there has been an increase in these cases." Somer also added that so far, 5 children have lost their lives.

If the cause of HIV in children is not the mother, transmission through sexual contact can occur. This situation sometimes means sexual relations at a young age, and sometimes it indicates abuse. Therefore, each child HIV case is also investigated legally.

THERE ARE 250 HIV POSITIVE CHILDREN IN TURKEY

According to a report by Melike Şahin from NTV, there are approximately 250 known and diagnosed HIV positive children in Turkey. Warning families, Somer stated, "They need to monitor their children's private lives and inform them about safe relationships."

Thanks to treatments, transmission from mother to baby has been prevented in recent years. Approximately 200 children born healthy to HIV positive mothers are being monitored at Istanbul Medical Faculty.
