Turkish-German-French co-production “Sesime Gel” (Come to My Voice) has won two awards this month in Belgium, adding to director Hüseyin Karabey's growing collection of international accolades.
“Sesime Gel” won both the Special Jury Prize and the critics' prize at the 14th Mediterranean Film Festival in Brussels, which took place from Dec. 5-12.
The festival screened over 70 feature-length films, short films and documentaries from 20 Mediterranean countries in various sections. “Sesime Gel” was among eight films in the festival's international competition, which also featured productions from Serbia, Spain, Tunisia, Italy, Algeria, Kosovo and Israel.
“Sesime Gel” is the second feature by Karabey, the director behind the critically acclaimed “My Marlon and Brando.” The film, which had its world premiere earlier this year at the Berlin International Film Festival, follows a Kurdish grandmother and her young granddaughter as they search for a non-existent gun in order to free the girl's father, who is suspected by the authorities to be a guerilla fighter.
The film opened in cinemas in Turkey on Dec. 5 in limited release.
