More than 30 cartel members opened fire on soldiers just 11 kilometers outside the capital of Sinaloa state, Culiacan. A clash ensued after the soldiers returned fire, and some cartel members fled the scene. The Mexican Ministry of Defense announced that 19 gang members were killed in the clash, and one cartel leader was arrested. The detainee was identified as Edwin Antonio "N," who is the local leader of the Sinaloa Cartel led by Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada. Following the clash, it was also reported that 7 vehicles and 30 firearms, including machine guns, ammunition, military vests, and helmets were seized. Since the beginning of September, approximately 200 people have been killed due to the escalating violence, and more than 300 people are believed to be missing. The 76-year-old Zambada co-founded Sinaloa with Joaquin Guzman, known as "El Chapo," in the late 1980s while he was imprisoned in the U.S.
