It has been reported that Naval Group, one of the largest players in France's defense industry, has been subjected to a cyber attack.

EXTREMELY SENSITIVE INFORMATION STOLEN

A hacker using the alias "Neferpitou" claimed to have stolen 1 terabyte of data from the company, alleging that among the stolen data were extremely sensitive information related to nuclear submarine systems. Reports in the French press indicated that the 1 terabyte of data, said to belong to the French defense giant, included software codes for weapon systems, infrastructure guidelines, confidential correspondence, and technical documents spanning from 2006 to 2024.

SHARED DATA AND DOCUMENTS ON THE INTERNET

The hacker, who requested to be contacted by the company, first shared a 13 GB data package on the internet after giving the company a 72-hour deadline. The hacker later published a second data package of 6 GB and documents allegedly related to parts of the STORM weapon system software used in nuclear attack submarines.

"REPUTATION-BASED OPERATION"

Naval Group stated that there was no contact with the attacker and no ransom demand was made. While the company's internal security teams confirmed that the documents belonged to them, they stated that these were not classified defense materials and that there was no direct breach of the systems. Therefore, the events were described by the company as a "reputation-based operation."

SUSPICION OF RUSSIAN HACKERS BEHIND THE ATTACK

After the incident, attention turned to the Russian hacker group NoName05716_16, which had previously carried out attacks on government institutions in Europe and the USA. The group had recently claimed to have accessed Naval Group's systems. However, authorities reported that no direct link had been established between this attack and the recent data leaks.

CYBER THREATS ON THE RISE

The French Defense Intelligence and Security Directorate (DRSD) announced that cyber attacks targeting the defense industry have significantly increased in 2024. While Naval Group continues the investigation in cooperation with the national cybersecurity agency ANSSI, it is still unknown how much risk the leaked data poses to national security.
