DEATH TOLL EXPECTED TO RISE
In the border region between Nepal and China, on August 26, the collapse of a glacier in the high elevations of the Himalayas caused a massive amount of rock, ice, and melting glacial water to sweep into the valleys below, leading to severe flooding downstream; the death toll from this disaster has exceeded one thousand.
DEATH TOLL EXCEEDS ONE THOUSAND
Nepal's disaster management agency announced in a statement released today that 987 people have died in the country and 4,247 people, including 583 foreign nationals, are missing. Chinese authorities, in their latest statement on Sunday, announced that 16 people had died and 546 people were still missing.
11,814 PEOPLE RESCUED
Approximately 10,000 soldiers and police officers are working in the disaster-affected regions of Nepal. However, search and rescue efforts are progressing slowly due to the severe damage to infrastructure and the lack of heavy machinery needed for debris removal.
Teams continuing to search for thousands of people whose fate is unknown are using helicopters and other aircraft to reach settlements stranded in areas where floods and landslides have destroyed roads and bridges. Authorities have announced that so far, 11,814 people have been rescued as part of the efforts. Teams are also trying to deliver aid to people in areas where roads have been closed to traffic.
AT LEAST 500 PEOPLE TRAPPED IN TUNNELS
Priority is being given to finding the 900 people who worked at the 12 hydropower plant projects damaged by the floods and are missing. Approximately 500 of these individuals are believed to be trapped in tunnels.
In footage released by the Nepali army, rescue teams were seen advancing through mud in dark tunnels, searching for signs of life.
Meteorological authorities have warned that intermittent rains are expected to continue throughout the week, and that water levels in rivers could rise again, potentially causing floods.
