In the İmamoğlu district of Adana, the fruits of cherry saplings brought from Spain by a producer were harvested after 5 years. With an average yield of 10 tons per decare, the cherries are finding buyers at prices ranging from 3.5 to 4 Euros and are being exported to Europe.
Fatih Kara, a farmer in Ufacıkören neighborhood of İmamoğlu district in Adana, planted cherry saplings brought from Spain 5 years ago.
HARVEST BEGAN WITH FOLK SONGS
The producer, who could not get yield last year due to frost and hail, aimed for approximately 10 tons of yield from a 15-decare area this year. Harvest, which started with the folk songs of agricultural workers, saw cherries placed in crates.
PRICE REACHES UP TO 4 EUROS PER KILO
It was learned that the harvested cherries are exported to Europe via agricultural companies in the region, with cherries selling for between 3.5 and 4 Euros per kilogram in the orchard.
İmamoğlu District Agriculture and Forestry Director Cemil Çabuk and technical staff also joined the early cherry harvest, inspecting the orchard and gathering information on the current state, production quality, and efficiency of cherry cultivation.
“WE STARTED PRODUCTION IN THE REGION DESPITE THOSE WHO SAID IT COULDN'T BE DONE”
Producer Fatih Kara explained that he started production in the region despite those who said cherries couldn't grow in Çukurova, saying, "We started cherry production about 5 years ago. They said cherries couldn't grow in Çukurova, but the saplings brought from Spain adapted to our region. We expected yield last year but couldn't get the desired result due to frost and hail. This year, our harvest has begun in a 15-decare area as per our expectations. We expect a total yield of 10 tons."
“WE BEGAN TO REAP THE REWARDS OF 5 YEARS OF EFFORT”
Kara, stating that the cultivated cherry variety is 'Royal Tioga', said, "We began to reap the rewards of 5 years of effort. We give our products to the company, and they are exported to Europe. The price per kilogram of cherries in the orchard varies between 3.5 and 4 Euros."
