Dilan Öztürk, who was injured after being shot with a handgun by her ex-husband Ali K. while taking her children to school in Adana on March 26, recounted those moments at the scene. Öztürk, who said the gun jammed and that her ex-husband pointed the gun at her head saying, "Say your last prayer, I'm going to kill you," expressed that she fears he will kill her if the defendant is released. The defendant, for whom up to 28 years in prison is sought, remains in custody, and the trial has been adjourned to November 12.

In Adana, Dilan Öztürk, who was injured after being shot with a handgun by her ex-husband, went to the place where the incident occurred before the court hearing and recounted those moments. The young woman said, "I think that if he is released, he will complete the unfinished job and kill me. My only goal is to live in peace and safety with my children."

Biologist Dilan Öztürk divorced businessman Ali K., whom she claimed subjected her to psychological and physical violence, 3 years ago. After the divorce, Öztürk obtained a restraining order against her ex-husband, to whose threats she was exposed. When the threats ended, Öztürk did not extend this order, and on this past March 26, she left the house to take her children A.K. (5) and Ş.K. (7) to school. Ali K., who called his ex-wife in the morning, said he wanted to see his children.

HE FIRED 10 SHOTS IN FRONT OF HIS CHILDREN

A while later, Ali K. blocked Öztürk, who was leaving the apartment building with her children, and fired 10 shots from a handgun he took from his waist, injuring his ex-wife in the legs. Ali K., who was alleged to have then driven his car at his ex-wife, fled after people around intervened. Ali K., who surrendered at the Çukurova District Police Department after the incident, said in his statement, "It happened by accident in front of my children's eyes. I had no intention of causing injury."

Ali K., who was arrested by the court he was brought before after his interrogation, had the indictment prepared against him accepted by the Adana 4th High Criminal Court. The trial of the defendant, arrested on the allegation of injuring her with a handgun, has begun, with a request for up to 28 years in prison for the crimes of "attempted intentional killing of a divorced spouse," "purchasing, transporting, or possessing unlicensed firearms and ammunition," and "threatening with a weapon."

DEFENDANT: I DON'T REMEMBER WHO PULLED THE TRIGGER

Speaking at the hearing, Ali K. said there was no hostility between him and his ex-wife, and stated, "The handgun went off while Dilan was interfering with my hand. I don't remember who pulled the trigger. I did not notice how Dilan was injured. Because of the nervous breakdown I experienced, I fired two shots into the ground. Afterwards, I got into my car and left the scene. I also threw the handgun out of the car. I did not use the statement 'I will shoot you in the head' toward Dilan. I do not accept the accusations. I request my release and acquittal."

Dilan Öztürk, however, said that these statements did not reflect the truth.

The court ruled for the continuation of the defendant's detention and adjourned the hearing to November 12.

HE SAID, "MAKE YOUR FINAL PRAYER, I WILL KILL YOU"

Before the hearing, Dilan Öztürk made statements to journalists in the area where the attack took place. Recounting those moments, the young woman said, "On the day of the incident, I was going to take my children to school. My ex-husband had called me in the morning; he wanted to speak to the children on the phone. He told me that he wanted my friend to drop the children off at school. I did not accept and said I would drop them off myself. Then I went down from the house. He had hidden in the empty area on the left side of the apartment entrance. When I came out with the children, he came from behind us and said 'Hi,' then took his hand to his left chest and pulled out his gun. I pushed my children. I did not have a scuffle with him. I wanted to keep my children in a safe area. Then he fired the first bullet. My children started screaming. Right after that, he moved to the other side and fired the other bullet. At that moment, my neighbor living on the ground floor threw himself in front as a shield. He pushed the individual and threw him off balance toward the wall opposite. When the gun jammed, he quickly racked the slide to fix it and pointed the gun at my head. He said to me, 'Make your final prayer, I will kill you.' Because the gun jammed and my neighbors and children screamed, he could not carry out his act. People dragged me to the edge of the wall because I was lying on the ground, and this time he turned his car toward us and tried to drive over us. This suspect intended not only my life but also the lives of other people."

Öztürk, noting that she wanted justice to be served at the upcoming hearing, argued that Ali K. would kill her if he were free, and said, "My expectation from justice is that the right is served and what is necessary is done. I do not want anyone to have to live in fear like me. Coming here every day and entering that house, experiencing the same psychology over and over with my children is not easy at all. Especially as a mother, experiencing this is very difficult. I think that if he is released, he will complete the unfinished job and kill me. My only goal is to live in peace and safety with my children. I do not want to cast suspicion on anyone or accuse any person. I just want him to receive the punishment he deserves."
