Israeli army sources have described a Wednesday attack on an Israeli patrol on the border with Egypt – which injured two Israeli troops – as "criminal."
They said an exchange of fire had taken place between drug smugglers in the border area and Israeli troops on patrol.
One of the sources was "ed by Israel Radio as saying that the Israeli army had investigated the attack, which was carried out by drug smugglers in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula and left a female officer and a soldier wounded, and concluded that it was "criminal" in nature.
Smugglers had opened fire on the Israeli troops, leaving the officer and soldier wounded, the source added.
Quoting unnamed sources, Israeli media said earlier that three attackers had been killed after Israeli troops returned fire from both ground and air.
The army, however, has yet to confirm this account.
Israeli army spokesman for Arab media Avichay Adraee wrote on Twitter earlier that the army was currently assessing the border attack.
"We will not hesitate in responding to any attack on our citizens or troops," Adraee said.
There has not yet been any claim of responsibility for the attack.
