Egypt Records Highest Daily Coronavirus Cases

Egypt on Thursday reported 1,127 more cases, the highest daily figure ever, bringing the tally of cases to 20,793.

The death toll reached 845 with 29 additional fatalities, according to the country's Health Ministry.

The ministry said the number of recoveries rose by 154 to reach 5,359.

On Feb.14, Egypt announced the first coronavirus infection in the country.

Outcry persists among medical staff due to the inability of the country's health infrastructure to cope with the accelerating infection rate among doctors as well as the "inaction" of the Health Ministry to perform its duty to protect doctors.On Monday, the Egyptian Medical Syndicate said in a statement that it had recorded 350 coronavirus infections including 19 deaths, before saying on Wednesday that the death toll among doctors rose to 23.

However, the Health Ministry said on Monday that preventive measures were taken and more than 19,500 tests were made for medical workers nationwide, including about 9,000 swab tests.

It added in the statement that hospitals treated 291 health workers, including 69 doctors, 11 of whom have died.
