Egypt Slams Remarks By Un's Ban About Sinai Migrant Deaths

24.11.2015 21:18

Sudanese migrants shot dead by Egyptian security forces on Monday while attempting to cross border with Israel.

Egypt's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday criticized remarks by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in which he criticized the recent killing of five undocumented Sudanese migrants on Egypt's border with Israel.

The migrants were shot dead in the Sinai Peninsula on Monday by Egyptian security forces while attempting to cross into Israel in search of work.

On the same day, Ban had voiced his deep concern over the killings, calling on the Egyptian authorities to launch a full investigation into the incident.

In a Tuesday statement, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid described Ban's remarks as "unfortunate", saying they were based on "inaccurate information".

According to Abu Zeid, the migrants had opened fire on Egyptian security forces first, injuring an Egyptian army conscript.

Egypt's Sinai Peninsula is a transit hub for African migrants hoping to cross into Israel -- with which Sinai shares a border -- in search of employment.

Last week, at least 15 Sudanese migrants were reportedly killed in North Sinai during a shootout between Egyptian security forces and smugglers. - Mısır
