Electoral Threshold To Be Lowered To 7%: Turkish President

18.01.2022 15:27

Amendment for electoral law to come to parliament in coming weeks, says Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Turkish president on Tuesday said the electoral threshold in Turkiye will be lowered to 7%.

Turkiye currently has a 10% threshold required for the political parties to claim seats in the Turkish parliament.

Speaking to journalists on his way back to Turkiye from Albania, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the amendment for the electoral law will come to the parliament's agenda in the coming weeks.

Erdogan said a team from his Justice and Development (AK) Party and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) worked on the amendment, adding that he recently received the draft and shared it with MHP leader Devlet Bahceli.

"Mr. Devlet said this draft also works for them. Our approach here for the threshold is 7%," the president noted.

"Our colleagues will meet again this week or next week about the draft that has been prepared and worked on. We'll give it its final shape and then complete ," he added. -
