Elazığ Governorship issued water and hygiene warnings amid an increase in complaints of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea across the city; internal medicine specialist Dr. Serpil Arslan also warned that the rise in cases is microbial in origin.
In recent days, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of citizens applying to healthcare institutions in Elazığ with complaints of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Following the recent developments, the Elazığ Governor's Office issued an official statement warning citizens, while experts also gave vital warnings about the risks posed by the disease.
GOVERNOR'S OFFICE WARNED
In the statement made by the Elazığ Governor's Office, it was stated that the increase in cases is being closely monitored and that water sample analyses are being meticulously continued. Drawing attention to the fact that acute intestinal infections are mostly transmitted through contaminated water, unhygienic foods, and hand contact, the Governor's Office called for avoiding uncontrolled water sources, consuming water by boiling it in suspicious cases, and paying utmost attention to personal hygiene.
"BOTH SEASONAL TRANSITION AND RAINFALLS HAD AN EFFECT"
Stating that they encounter patients from all age groups and evaluating the density in polyclinics and emergency services, Specialist Dr. Serpil Arslan said, "I would like to talk about the cases of diarrhea, vomiting, and fever that have increased a lot these days. Due to both the seasonal transition and the increase in rainfall, we have started to frequently encounter children, adults, pregnant women, and elderly individuals with diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever in polyclinics and emergency rooms. This is of microbial origin. In microbial cases, the most important thing we need to pay attention to is hygiene. Our priority is hygiene because this microbe spreads through hand and mouth contact. We need to pay great attention to hand hygiene and the hygiene of the water we use. We should not use water that we do not trust and that is not inspected and controlled. Likewise, the food and grocery items we buy from outside should be prepared properly."
"THERE IS A RISK OF KIDNEY FAILURE"
Drawing attention to the fact that fluid loss can cause critical results, especially in risk groups, Specialist Dr. Arslan said, "If we become ill and have diarrhea, vomiting, high fever, and abdominal pain, we need to apply to the nearest healthcare unit and get our treatment in a timely manner. The part that concerns us most here is dehydration, especially in patients with low resistance, children, pregnant women, and the elderly. Since the body will lose water with diarrhea and vomiting, the situation can progress to kidney failure. Therefore, our citizens who have complaints should definitely consult our specialist physician and receive appropriate treatment." - ELAZIĞ
