The leader of the New Welfare Party, Fatih Erbakan, argued that the minimum wage should be raised to around 35,000 lira in accordance with inflation and economic growth rates, emphasizing the importance of granting workers their rights.

Fatih Erbakan, the Chairman of the New Welfare Party, stated that the minimum wage does not reflect any share of Turkey's economic growth, saying, "If we say we will give the share of growth that we have not provided for almost 20 years to the minimum wage earners and workers, a minimum wage of 34 thousand lira emerges."

VISITED TÜRK-İŞ

Fatih Erbakan, the Chairman of the New Welfare Party, along with Deputy Chairmen Suat Kılıç and Fatih Uğurlu, and New Welfare Party Konya Deputy Ali Yüksel, visited the Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions (TÜRK-İŞ). Speaking to the press after the visit, Erbakan noted that the minimum wage determination commission would start its work next week, and they made this visit to express their views on what kind of minimum wage figure should be formed.

"IF WE HAVE A 40% INFLATION RATE, THE MINIMUM WAGE SHOULD BE RAISED TO 24 THOUSAND LIRA"

Pointing out that inflation has exceeded expectations, Erbakan stated: "It is said that the inflation rate for 2025 will be at the level of 21%. However, this year, while saying '33%', inflation is likely to be at the level of 48% or 50%, and very likely, the inflation forecast for 2025 will not hold, and inflation will be at the level of 35% to 40%. Considering that the minimum wage is raised only once a year, if we have a 40% inflation rate, the minimum wage should be raised to 24 thousand lira."

"THE MINIMUM WAGE SHOULD BE RAISED TO 35 THOUSAND LIRA"

Erbakan stated that for 20 years, the minimum wage has not reflected any share of Turkey's economic growth, saying, "When this share is taken into account, the minimum wage should be raised to 34 thousand lira, as calculated scientifically by our Economic Affairs Presidency. In other words, we will not let inflation erode it, and if we say we will give the share of growth that we have not provided for almost 20 years to the minimum wage earners and workers, a minimum wage of 34 thousand lira emerges. We must definitely give the rights of the worker, and according to our view, I express that the minimum wage should be raised to 35 thousand lira for 2025," he said.

"PEOPLE CANNOT EVEN SURVIVE FOR 10 DAYS, LET ALONE A MONTH"

Turk-İş President Ergun Atalay also stated that the minimum wage is currently a survival wage, which used to be a determining wage 5-6 years ago, saying, "Unfortunately, this is Turkey's largest contract. There are about 9 million minimum wage earners. In the past, the minimum wage was said to cause inflation. The minimum wage has not increased in our country for a year, but inflation continues to rise. In short, the minimum wage is not the cause of inflation. Therefore, it is impossible for a retiree to survive on 12 thousand, or for people to survive on 17 thousand. People cannot even survive for 10 days, let alone a month," he stated.

After the visit to Türk-İş, Erbakan also visited the headquarters of Hak-İş and DİSK.
