Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has signed a decree allowing citizens who fled abroad due to the civil war to return to their country. ASSAD ALLOWED SYRIANS TO RETURN TO THEIR COUNTRYWhile efforts continue for normalization steps between Turkey and Syria, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad made a notable decision. Issuing a decree, Assad provided a general amnesty for offenses of desertion, crimes, and violations committed before September 22, 2024. With this decree, Syrians who fled abroad are allowed to return to their country. THEY NEED TO RETURN WITHIN 4 MONTHSAccording to the decree, those hiding within the country will need to surrender within 3 months. Those abroad will be asked to return to Syria within 4 months. The amnesty does not cover certain misdemeanors outlined in construction control laws, economic crimes, electricity theft, fraudulent means to obtain communication services, and crimes under the Consumer Protection Law. PRESIDENT ERDOGAN HAD ADDRESSED ASSADOn the other hand, President Erdogan held a press conference at the Atatürk Airport State Guesthouse before his visit to the United States to attend the 79th United Nations (UN) General Assembly. Erdogan stated that he was waiting for Syrians to return to their country and said: "The tension in Syria needs to end, and we will clearly demonstrate that the instability there, especially by terrorist organizations and of course Israel, is a form of state terrorism." "MILLIONS OF SYRIANS ARE WAITING TO RETURN TO THEIR HOMELANDS"To ensure peace and stability throughout Syrian territory, the steps that Turkey and Syria can take together show that the Damascus administration has seen that the opposition has maintained a state of non-conflict in Syria for some time. This situation provides a favorable environment to open an effective door for a permanent solution. Millions of people outside Syria are waiting to return to their homelands. "WE ARE READY FOR NORMALIZATION OF RELATIONS"We have made our call on this matter. We have also expressed our willingness to meet with Bashar al-Assad for the normalization of relations between Turkey and Syria. We are now waiting for a response from the other side. We are ready for this. As two Muslim countries, we want to realize this unity and togetherness as soon as possible. I believe that a new era in the relations between the two countries will hopefully begin as a result of such a meeting."
