EU Renews Restrictive Measures On Numerous Individuals, Entities In Myanmar For Another Year

26.04.2024 19:12

Decision comes ‘in view of continuing grave situation in Myanmar, including actions undermining democracy, as well as serious human rights violations,’ says European Council.

The European Council on Friday announced that it renewed restrictive measures on numerous individuals and entities in Myanmar for another year, until April 30, 2025.

"The decision was taken on the basis of the annual review of the restrictive measures and in view of the continuing grave situation in Myanmar, including actions undermining democracy, as well as serious human rights violations," the council said in a statement.

Restrictive measures, which presently apply to a total of 103 individuals and 21 entities, include an asset freeze and provision of funds or economic resources as well as travel ban to the EU for the listed individuals.

Other EU restrictive measures, including an embargo on arms and equipment and export restrictions on equipment for monitoring communication, also remain in place, according to the statement.

"The repressive actions of the Myanmar military, marked by the use of indiscriminate violence against its own population, stand as a grave violation of basic human rights and a blatant disregard for the principles of justice and humanity," the union stressed.

In April 2013, the EU adopted restrictive measures in respect of Myanmar.

The union also imposed restrictive measures against those responsible for the military coup staged in Myanmar in February 2021. -
