Ex-Trump Official To Face House Subpoenas: Report

25.05.2017 00:13

President Donald Trump's former national security advisor will face new congressional subpoenas, the House intelligence committee's top Democrat said Wednesday.

Rep. Adam Schiff told reporters at a breakfast gathering he hopes the committee will subpoena retired Army Gen. Michael Flynn later this week ahead of a one-week recess.

"We initially requested his voluntary participation," Schiff said, according to online news outlet Politico. "He declined. We are going to be subpoenaing him."

Multiple requests for comment to Schiff's team from Anadolu Agency went unanswered.

Like its Senate counterpart and the FBI, the House Intelligence Committee is probing potential links between Trump's 2016 campaign team and Russia's alleged attempts to influence the presidential race in Trump's favor.

Flynn has been a key focus of the inquiries after he was ousted for office for misleading senior officials, including Vice President Mike Pence, about his contacts with Russia's U.S. ambassador.

On Monday, Flynn declined to hand over documents subpoenaed by the Senate Intelligence Committee, invoking his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.

His decision was shortly followed by the House Oversight Committee's top Democrat declaration that Flynn appears to have lied during the process of renewing his security clearance.

Rep. Elijah Cummings also requested committee chairman Jason Chaffetz subpoena the White House regarding documents related to Flynn. -
