At least 23 people lost their lives and 11 were injured in an explosion and subsequent fire at a supermarket during the Day of the Dead festival in Mexico. It has been reported that at least 23 people lost their lives due to the flames that engulfed the popular discount chain Waldo's store following an explosion during the Day of the Dead festival celebrations. It was also announced that at least 11 people were injured in the incident.
MOST OF THE VICTIMS WERE CHILDREN
The governor of Sonora state, where the city is located, Alfonso Durazo, stated in a video he shared on social media, "I have instructed a comprehensive and transparent investigation to be launched to clarify the causes of the accident." Durazo revealed that most of the deceased were children.
CAUSED DEATHS DUE TO TOXIC GAS
The state attorney general, Gustavo Salas, stated that according to the data from the forensic unit, most of the deaths were caused by inhalation of toxic gas.
STATEMENT FROM THE PRESIDENT
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased in a message she published on social media. Sheinbaum noted that she had instructed support teams to be sent to the victim's families and the injured.
CLAIM OF ELECTRICAL FAULT
While the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, some media outlets suggested that it could have been caused by an electrical fault. Municipal officials stated that there was no possibility of an attack.
