Famous geologist's alarming statement: Earthquakes may occur in 3 regions, prepare accordingly.

08.11.2024 22:11

After the earthquake in Elazığ, Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz made evaluations regarding the fault line and the region where the earthquake occurred. Tüysüz highlighted three areas, stating that the risk of earthquakes is high in these regions and that necessary preparations should be made.

According to the data from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), an earthquake of magnitude 5 occurred in Elazığ at 17:04. The tremor occurred at a depth of approximately 16.22 kilometers. The Kandilli Observatory reported the earthquake's magnitude as 5.1 and its depth as 5.0 kilometers. The earthquake was also felt in surrounding provinces.

THERE IS NO NEGATIVE SITUATION

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya and Elazığ Governor Numan Hatipoğlu announced that there is no negative situation due to the earthquake.

"IT MAY OCCUR IN THE FIRST 3 DAYS"

Geologist Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz made striking evaluations regarding the earthquake during a live broadcast on NTV. Tüysüz stated, "The expected aftershocks in Elazığ may reach around 4. This activity will continue. It may go up to a magnitude of 4 and may occur in the first 3 days."

"THE GROUND IN ELAZIĞ IS BAD"

Tüysüz mentioned that the most significant earthquake in the region occurred in 2020, stating that the source of this earthquake was the East Anatolian Fault Line, which, although a bit far from Elazığ, caused damage to the city due to the poor ground conditions in Elazığ.

"A MAJOR EARTHQUAKE IS NOT EXPECTED IN ELAZIĞ"

Regarding the recent earthquake, Tüysüz said, "There was an earthquake on this fault in the 1700s. Earthquakes of magnitude 4-5 occurred in the 2010s. We do not expect the current earthquake of magnitude 5 to cause damage. We can say that there is no expectation of a larger earthquake on the fault where this earthquake occurred."

"IT DOES NOT PRODUCE EARTHQUAKES FOR 300 YEARS AFTER IT BREAKS"

Tüysüz expressed that the East Anatolian Fault consists of several fault segments, stating, "We call these fault segments. After a segment breaks, it does not produce earthquakes for 200-300 years. Since the fault broke in the 2020 earthquake, we did not expect another earthquake in these areas."

HE POINTED OUT 3 AREAS

Tüysüz highlighted the earthquake risk in 3 areas: "However, due to the effects of the February 6 earthquake in the region and the recurrence interval of historical earthquakes, we have been drawing attention to the Palu-Bingöl-Yedisu area for a long time. The earthquake that occurred today took place on a previously broken fault."
