Brazilian police had to use smoke grenades inside Estádio Castelão stadium as fans invaded the pitch and fought with each other following the end of the Ceara state championship final on Sunday between Fortaleza and Ceara football clubs.
Two city rival clubs Ceara and Fortaleza met at the final match of Ceara state league. Ceara managed to protect 2-1 score during ninety minutes of the match. But beating a last minute goal in extra time Fortaleza made the score 2-2 which gave the title to them as they had beaten Ceara 2-1 in the first leg last week.
After referee’s final whistle the stadium turned into battlefield as angry Ceara fans attacked the fans of Fortaleza, who invaded the pitch to celebrate the championship of their team, with iron sticks and plastic seats. Although police teams promptly intervened the quarrel, they were insufficient to hold back the rebellious mob. Police had to use percussion grenades, plastic bullets and tear gas to end the violence inside the stadium.
