Düzce Mayor Faruk Özlü accused the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) administration. Özlü stated that they had made an offer to become a sister city with Istanbul, but the offer was not accepted by IMM, claiming that sewage water is mixing with the water consumed by Istanbul residents.
Özlü, who accused ISKI of failing to fulfill its duties, made a statement on his social media account. In his post, Özlü included the following remarks:
"ISKI IS AVOIDING FULFILLING ITS DUTIES"
"There are investments that ISKI, a subsidiary of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, needs to make in Düzce, which is located within its water basin. These investments include ISKI's obligations regarding the cleaning of the streams that supply water to Istanbul. However, ISKI has been avoiding making investments and fulfilling its duties for 5 years."
"SEWAGE WATER IS MIXING WITH THE WATER CONSUMED BY ISTANBUL RESIDENTS"
IMM and ISKI administrations must urgently complete these investments. Sewage water is mixing with the water consumed by Istanbul residents. Last year, the General Directorate of Water Management's attempt to declare Istanbul and Düzce as 'water siblings' was not accepted by IMM. Following this, Düzce was declared a water sibling with Kocaeli. For the information of our fellow citizens from Düzce."
