In Amasya, animal markets were closed until a second announcement in order to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease seen in neighboring provinces and a village. In the city, one of the important centers of red meat production, more than 200,000 cattle are being vaccinated within the scope of the measures taken. The vaccination work carried out by teams of the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry is planned to be completed within 1 month.

The vaccination campaign launched against foot-and-mouth disease in Amasya continues. After livestock markets were closed in the city, teams mobilized to vaccinate cattle.

MORE THAN 200,000 CATTLE ARE BEING VACCINATED

By decision of the Amasya Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry and the Provincial Animal Health Police Commission, measures have been implemented to protect animal health and prevent possible outbreaks. In this context, the aim is to vaccinate more than 200,000 cattle in the city. Teams from the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry plan to complete the work within 1 month.

IT CAUSES WEIGHT LOSS AND A DROP IN MILK PRODUCTION

Foot-and-mouth disease, an infectious disease among farm animals, manifests itself with blister-like lesions in and around the mouth, on the hooves, udders, and skin. Fever, weakness, excessive salivation, and loss of appetite are also among the symptoms of the disease. The disease causes weight loss in animals and a decrease in milk production.

“THE FIRST PRINCIPLE OF PROTECTION FROM THE DISEASE IS VACCINATION”

Özgür Pehlivan, President of the Amasya Chamber of Veterinary Surgeons, touching on the importance of vaccination in preventing the disease, which can lead to major economic losses, said, “There are posts on social media claiming that the disease appeared after vaccination or that the animal aborted. These are not scientifically proven. Since there is no treatment for this disease, the most important thing is protection. The first principle of protection is vaccination. We recommend that our breeders definitely have their animals vaccinated.”

EVEN FLOCKS OF BIRDS CAN CARRY THE DISEASE

Emphasizing that wild animals are also effective in the transmission of the disease, Pehlivan said, “Even flocks of birds that land to feed at an infected place can carry this disease very far away. As long as vaccination is carried out regularly, we do not think there will be a very serious problem.”

“VACCINATION ALSO REDUCES ECONOMIC LOSSES”

Ahmet Başkıran, a veterinarian employed at the Amasya Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, said, “Vaccination helps animals gain immunity against the disease, while also reducing the risk of the disease spreading and potential economic losses. For this reason, it is of great importance that our breeders comply with our ministry’s vaccination programs and have their animals vaccinated on time.”

THANKS FROM THE BREEDER TO THE TEAMS

Breeder Nusret Göv, whose animals at his farm were vaccinated, also thanked the teams carrying out the work meticulously.
