Football: Sweden Come Third In Women's World Cup

06.07.2019 21:05

Sweden beat England 2 1 to gain third place at France 2019 tournament.

Sweden beat England 2-1 Saturday to finish the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup on the third spot.

Sweden took the lead in the 11th minute at Stade de Nice in France as Swedish midfielder Kosovare Asllani's shot beat English goalkeeper Carly Telford.

Sweden doubled the lead in the 22nd minute. Swedish forward Sofia Jakobsson curved the ball to make it 2-0.

Jakobsson's goal for Sweden might give a comfortable lead for the Nordic team but England replied back in the 31st minute with midfielder Fran Kirby.

Kirby's goal for the Lionesses narrowed the gap to one.

England's equalizer netted by Ellen White was disallowed for a handball after a VAR (Video Assistant Referee) review.

Sweden defended their goal to secure the 2-1 lead in Nice as they are returning home with a bronze medal.

Jakobsson was named as the player of the match.

"I think those two goals really did cost us, but we showed our resilience and a lot of character after those goals and in the second half. We had some chances and we gave everything in that game - there's not one person who didn't give everything," White said over the loss against Sweden.

Holders U.S. will take on the Netherlands in the World Cup final on Sunday at Stade de Lyon. -
