A forest fire near the town of Omis in Croatia's Dalmatia region has spread to residential areas. At least 10 people were injured and thousands were evacuated. The fire is under control, but the damage is extensive.

At least 10 people were injured, 2 of them seriously, after a forest fire that started yesterday in Croatia's Dalmatia region reached the city center.

10 PEOPLE INJURED, 2 SERIOUSLY

The forest fire that started yesterday evening around 8:20 PM local time in Lokva Rogoznica near the coastal town of Omis in Croatia's Dalmatia region caused fear and panic as it reached the city center. Spreading rapidly due to the wind and jumping to residential areas, the fire reduced many houses and vehicles to ashes. Approximately one thousand residents and tourists were evacuated. According to initial assessments, at least 10 people were injured, 2 of them seriously, due to the fire.

FIRE BEING COMBATED FROM BOTH LAND AND AIR

The fire was brought under control by 157 firefighters responding from both land and air, while the damage caused by the fire became evident at daybreak. The Adriatic Coastal Road (D8) was closed to traffic in the affected area, and restrictions were also imposed on the Omis ring road.
