Former General Commander of the Gendarmerie, retired Lieutenant General Galip Mendi, who has been undergoing lymph cancer treatment at a private hospital in Izmir for a while, has passed away due to multiple organ failure.

Former General Commander of the Gendarmerie, retired Lieutenant General Galip Mendi (73), who was receiving treatment at a private hospital in Izmir, passed away.

Retired Lieutenant General Galip Mendi, who had been undergoing lymph cancer treatment at a private hospital in Izmir for some time, passed away due to multiple organ failure. The funeral arrangements for Mendi have not yet been finalized. Mendi retired from the Turkish Armed Forces in 2016 due to age limit decisions made by the High Military Council.

His son Cihan Mendi announced the news of his father's death on social media with the following words: "We lost our beloved father, our pride, our everything, a great statesman trained by the Turkish Armed Forces, a great Fenerbahçe supporter, former General Commander of the Gendarmerie, retired Lieutenant General Galip Mendi, this morning. Our condolences. We will share the details of the funeral when they are determined."

WHO IS GALIP MENDI?

Galip Mendi graduated from the Land Forces Military Academy as a second lieutenant in 1970, and then graduated from the Infantry School as a lieutenant in 1971. Mendi served in various units of the Turkish Land Forces until 1983, and then graduated from the Land Forces Academy as a staff officer in 1985. After becoming a staff officer, he served as the Infantry Battalion Commander in Muğla, the Operations and Training Branch Director at the Maltepe Military High School, and the Chief of Staff of the 70th Infantry Brigade. He was then assigned to the Special Forces Command in 1992. Within this command, he served as the School Commander between 1992-1994, the President of the Civil Defense Organization in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus between 1994-1996, the Commander of the 4th Special Forces Regiment between 1996-1997, and the Deputy Commander of the Special Forces Command between 1997-1998.

PERIOD AS THE COMMANDER OF THE TURKISH REPUBLIC OF NORTHERN CYPRUS SECURITY FORCES

Mendi was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in 1998. In this rank, he served as the Commander of the 1st Commando Brigade between 1998-2000, and the Commander of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Security Forces between 2000-2002. After being assigned to the Aegean Army Operations Staff Deputy Presidency in 2002, he was promoted to the rank of Major General one year later and was appointed as the Chief of Staff of the Aegean Army. In 2006, Mendi was assigned to the Transportation School and Training Center Command, and in 2007, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed as the Chief of the General Staff Military History and Strategic Studies Directorate and Inspection Directorate (ATAŞE). Later in this rank, he served as the Commander of the Combat and Service Support Training Command at the Land Forces Training and Doctrine Command, the Commander of the Training Corps, and the Commander of the 8th Corps.

In 2012, Mendi was promoted to the rank of General and was assigned to the 2nd Army Command. In 2014, he was assigned to the Aegean Army Command, and then in 2015, he was appointed as the General Commander of the Gendarmerie. During the military coup attempt in Turkey in 2016, he was detained by Brigadier General Timurcan Ermiş, the Order Officer and Commander of the Konya Gendarmerie Regional Command. He was rescued the next day, but was admitted to the Gülhane Military Medical Academy (GATA) for treatment due to spasms and hypertension caused by stress two days later. After recovering, he retired from the Turkish Armed Forces at the age of 65 in August 2016 due to age limit decisions made by the High Military Council.
