Former Supreme Court President Mehmet Akarca was elected as the Public Chief Inspector with 264 votes in the voting held in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), replacing Şeref Malkoç, whose term will end on December 5. MEHMET AKARCA BECAME THE NEW PUBLIC CHIEF INSPECTORThe election for the seat of Public Chief Inspector Şeref Malkoç, whose term will expire on December 5, was held today in the TBMM General Assembly. In the fourth round of the election held in the mixed commission consisting of members of the TBMM Petition Commission and the Human Rights Inquiry Commission on October 24, former Supreme Court President Mehmet Akarca received the absolute majority of votes, while Şinasi Yurdakul and Burhanettin Sağsöz were also candidates for Public Chief Inspector. In the fourth round of voting held in the TBMM General Assembly, Mehmet Akarca received 264 of the 276 votes cast and will assume the role of Public Chief Inspector on December 5. WILL START DUTIES ON DECEMBER 5The other candidate, Burhanettin Sağsöz, received no votes in the fourth round. Şeref Malkoç, who was first elected as Public Chief Inspector by the TBMM General Assembly on November 15, 2016, and then again on November 11, 2020, will see his term end on December 5. Mehmet Akarca lost the Supreme Court Presidency elections to Ömer Kerkez in the 37th round. WHO IS MEHMET AKARCA?Mehmet Akarca was born on January 21, 1963, in Şirvan. He graduated from Karşıyaka Havva Özişbakan High School and completed his law degree at Dokuz Eylul University in 1986, after which he served in the military for a short term in Kütahya. Akarca started his career as a judge candidate in İzmir; he served successively as a judge in Uşak/Ulubey, Van/Gevaş, Aydın/Sultanhisar, President of the Sivas Heavy Criminal Court, and held positions in the Kütahya Heavy Criminal Court and Commission Presidency, as well as the Karşıyaka Heavy Criminal Court and Commission Presidency. On January 18, 2010, Mehmet Akarca was elected as a member of the Supreme Court, and on October 21, 2013, he was elected as the President of the 14th Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court by the Supreme Court Grand General Assembly. Among the candidates presented by the Supreme Court Grand General Assembly, Akarca was first elected as the Chief Public Prosecutor of the Supreme Court by the President on May 18, 2015, and for the second time on May 21, 2019. He was elected as the First President of the Supreme Court on March 24, 2020. He is married and has two children.
