France To Review Bill For More Powers For Spy Agencies

19.04.2015 22:03

Under the proposed bill, spy agencies will get real time access to any person’s connection data and location without first seeking permission from judge.

France will reassess a proposed bill that will grant more sweeping powers to French intelligence services, French President Francois Hollande said Sunday.

In comments made to a French TV channel, Hollande said the bill, which will be voted on May 5, would be debated again in The Constitutional Council.

He assured that the fundamental rights and freedoms of people would not be violated in the draft bill.

However, human rights organizations in France warned that the bill might turn the country into an undemocratic state and would restrict individual freedoms.

Amnesty International said the bill "would pave the way for extremely intrusive surveillance practices with no judicial pre-authorization."

The bill, approved last month by the French Council of Ministers, would allow intelligence agents to directly monitor citizens' personal phone and Internet traffic on the pretext of preventing any possible terrorist acts.

Under the proposed bill, intelligence agencies would be able to get real-time access to any person's connection data, emails, key log-ins and mobile geo-location data without first seeking permission from a judge.
