In the Wadi Halfa district of northern Sudan, a collapse occurred at a gold mine that had previously been closed by authorities due to collapse risk and entry prohibited. Despite warnings, workers entered the mine, resulting in 15 deaths and 1 injury.

A collapse occurred at the Mohamed Tawfiq Gold Mine located in the Samna area of the Wadi Halfa district in northern Sudan.

15 DEAD, 1 INJURED

In a statement from the Sudan Mineral Resources Company, it was reported that 15 people died and 1 person was injured in the collapse.

The statement added that the company dispatched field teams to the area after the incident, and that local authorities and rescue teams are conducting search and rescue operations.

THEY ENTERED THE CLOSED MINE DESPITE WARNINGS

According to the statement, initial investigations indicate that the accident occurred because some workers entered the mine, which had been closed due to safety concerns following technical assessments, despite warnings.

The statement noted that the company's Environmental and Occupational Safety Unit had previously issued clear warnings that the mine was closed to activities due to the risk of collapse and that entry was prohibited, adding: "Some miners violated these instructions and entered the site, and parts of the mine collapsed."

OVER 2 MILLION PEOPLE ARE EMPLOYED

The traditional gold mining sector in Sudan, which employs more than 2 million people, accounts for approximately 80 percent of the country's total gold production.

Gold has become one of Sudan's most important sources of foreign currency after the country lost most of its oil revenue following South Sudan's independence in 2011.
