One of the highest fuel price increases in recent times was expected to be reflected at the pump after midnight tonight. According to new information from industry sources, the expected 1.50 lira increase for gasoline and the expected 5.13 lira increase for diesel will not be applied.
Due to fluctuations in global energy markets and increases in product prices caused by tensions in the Middle East, the fuel sector has been under significant cost pressure for months.
MASSIVE HIKES HAD BEEN ANNOUNCED
While Iran's blockade in the Strait of Hormuz and statements by US President Donald Trump have turned markets upside down, industry sources had stated that a record increase of 2 lira for gasoline and 6.85 lira for diesel was required, and announced that the price increases would be reflected at the pump from midnight tonight.
EŞEL MOBİL COULDN'T EVEN DROP IT BELOW 5 LIRA
With the eşel mobil regulation, which came into effect on August 1 and will remain valid until September 30, 25% of the price increases are covered by the state through SCT reductions, while the remaining 75% is reflected directly in sales prices. Under the eşel mobil system, the net increase expected to be reflected at the pump would have been 1.50 lira for gasoline and approximately 5.13 lira for diesel.
NO HIKE WILL BE IMPLEMENTED
However, according to the latest information obtained from industry sources, the implementation of the expected massive hikes has been abandoned. Industry sources announced that the hikes would not be made, stating, "The need for a hike of 5.13 lira for diesel and 1.50 lira for gasoline, which arose from overseas markets and was expected to take effect from midnight tonight, will not materialize."
HOW WOULD THE PRICE BOARDS HAVE LOOKED IF THE HIKES HAD BEEN APPLIED?
Although there are differences due to distribution company and inter-provincial transportation costs, prices would have reached serious levels if the expected hikes had been applied.
Here are the prices that would have occurred in some provinces if the hikes had been applied:
On the European side of Istanbul, the liter price of gasoline would have risen from 69.92 TL to 71.42 TL, and the liter price of diesel from 80.07 TL to 85.20 TL.
On the Anatolian side of Istanbul, gasoline would have climbed from 69.77 TL to 71.27 TL, and diesel from 79.93 TL to 85.06 TL.
In the capital Ankara, drivers would have started buying gasoline at 72.39 TL per liter and diesel at 86.32 TL per liter.
A similar scenario would have occurred at stations in Izmir, with gasoline reaching 72.67 TL per liter and diesel reaching 86.59 TL per liter.
DIESEL WOULD HAVE APPROACHED 90 LIRA
If these expected increases had been implemented, diesel would have come very close to the 90 TL limit in some Anatolian cities where transportation and dealer costs are higher.
