"SEND SOLDIERS TO BUY GREENLAND"

The Danish government, which is trying to avoid a political conflict with the U.S., wants to dissuade Trump from seizing Greenland by addressing security concerns. In this context, the Danish government communicated the message that Greenland is not for sale to Trump's team. Copenhagen proposed increasing security measures on the island, including boosting the American military presence, instead of purchasing the island. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated yesterday that she does not believe Trump will attempt to forcibly seize the island, despite his desire to discuss his comments regarding Greenland.

TRUMP'S STATEMENTS REGARDING GREENLAND

Preparing to take office in the U.S., Trump reiterated on his social media account on December 23, 2024, that Greenland should be under his country's control, arguing that owning and controlling the island is an "absolute necessity." Trump's remarks drew criticism from many, especially Greenland officials. Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Bourup Egede stated, "Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We will not lose our long-standing struggle for freedom."

IMPLIED HE MIGHT USE MILITARY TO CONTROL THE PANAMA CANAL AND GREENLAND

On January 8, Trump responded to a question about whether he would commit to not using military force to control the Panama Canal and Greenland, saying, "No, I can't assure you about those two (that I won't use military force). We may need to do something. We need these for our economic security." He argued that the Panama Canal was built for the U.S. military but is now operated by China, stating, "The Panama Canal is vital for our country. We gave the Panama Canal to Panama, but it is now operated by China. We did not give it to China."
