Galatasaray reacted sharply to the appointment of Erkan Engin as the VAR referee for the Gençlerbirliği match. The yellow-red club, recalling the controversial matches in which Engin had previously served, issued a striking warning to the Turkish Football Federation.
Galatasaray reacted to the appointment of VAR referee Erkan Engin ahead of their match against Gençlerbirliği in the 8th week of the Trendyol Süper Lig. In its statement, the yellow-red club criticized some of Engin's past decisions and his appointments this season.
THEY REMINDED OF FENERBAHÇE MATCHES
In its statement, Galatasaray argued that Erkan Engin played a role in awarding a penalty in favor of Fenerbahçe through a controversial VAR intervention in the Fenerbahçe-Kasımpaşa match in the 2023-2024 season.
The yellow-reds also recalled the penalty decision in last season's Fenerbahçe-Karagümrük match and criticized Engin's intervention. The statement also touched on the VAR intervention in the position of Barış Alper Yılmaz in the Trabzonspor-Galatasaray match.
THEY DREW ATTENTION TO HIS APPOINTMENTS IN GENÇLERBİRLİĞİ MATCHES
Galatasaray stated that with the Gençlerbirliği match, Erkan Engin will serve as VAR referee for the seventh time in the Süper Lig this season. Emphasizing that Engin was appointed in the VAR room in Gençlerbirliği's third home match this season, the yellow-red club drew attention to the fact that the same referee was included in the VAR team in two consecutive home matches.
"THE TFF IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY REFEREE ERROR"
Galatasaray concluded its statement with the following words:
"In light of this information, we inform the public that we will carefully follow the match and the referee management, and that we hold the Turkish Football Federation responsible for any referee error that may occur."
