While discussions on absolute nullity continue in CHP, noteworthy backstage information has come to light. Some CHP deputies proposed to Özgür Özel that a new party be established. However, Özel opposed this idea, signaling that he would continue his struggle under the CHP roof until the very last moment. It is also being discussed that if they are forcibly removed from the headquarters by police, their work will continue in the Turkish Grand National Assembly.
While the debates on absolute nullity and the convention crisis in CHP continue, the behind-the-scenes information shared by journalist Özgür Akbaş on NTV broadcast drew attention. According to the claim, some members of parliament suggested to Özgür Özel to establish a new party. However, it was alleged that Özel was not warm to this proposal and conveyed the message that he would continue his struggle under the roof of the CHP until the last moment.
“IF WE ARE FORCIBLY REMOVED BY POLICE, WE WILL MOVE TO THE PARLIAMENT”
The most striking detail discussed behind the scenes was the claim that the CHP administration was preparing for a possible scenario.
It was claimed that the Özel front expressed the view that if they were forcibly removed from the party headquarters by police, they would continue their political activities in the Turkish Grand National Assembly.
This assessment once again revealed the tension created within the party by the absolute nullity debates and the possible judicial process in the CHP.
EYES ON THE CONVENTION PROCESS IN CHP
While extraordinary convention debates continue on one hand in party circles, scenarios of management change and legal processes are being discussed on the other. It is being commented that the Özgür Özel front will not step back in protecting the current structure.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The Ankara Regional Court of Appeal ruled for absolute nullity for the CHP. It was decided to annul the 38th Ordinary Convention of the CHP held on November 4-5, 2023.
It was decided to suspend CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, members of the Central Executive Board (MYK) and the High Disciplinary Board (YDK). The court also decided that Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, members of the Party Assembly (PM) and YDK should provisionally assume duties. With the annulment of the convention, all ordinary and extraordinary conventions held after that date and the decisions taken were also invalidated.
WHAT DID THE COURT DECISION SAY?
In the decision of the 36th Civil Chamber of the Ankara Regional Court of Appeal, the statement included: “The provisional suspension from duty of Chairman Özgür Özel, who came to office through the convention of November 4-5, 2023, tainted by absolute nullity, the members of the Central Executive Board, the members of the Party Assembly, and the members of the High Disciplinary Board, and the provisional assumption of duty and reinstatement of Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, who was in office before the convention of November 4-5, 2023, along with the members of the Party Assembly and the High Disciplinary Board, until the decision becomes final.”
