Daren Li, a 41-year-old with Chinese and U.S. citizenship, has admitted to the crime of laundering $73 million in cryptocurrency. In the case heard in federal court, Li confessed to his role in an organized crime network that lasted from August 2021 to April 2024. According to investigation documents, Li established a complex fraud network. The suspect opened accounts in U.S. banks through fake companies and attempted to cover his tracks by converting the money collected from victims into USDT, the stablecoin of Tether. Investigators identified $341 million worth of cryptocurrency in a digital wallet belonging to the network. Nicole M. Argentieri, head of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, stated in a press release that Li conducted his criminal activities using international connections. The suspect admitted in his statement that $73.6 million was obtained through fraud, and that $59.8 million of this amount was laundered through shell companies. Li, who was captured in Atlanta in April 2024, is alleged to have had an accomplice named Yicheng Zhang, who was arrested a month later in Los Angeles. In the case presided over by Judge R. Gary Klausner, Li's sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 2025. The suspect faces a prison sentence of up to 20 years, as well as a fine of $500,000 or double the amount of the profits obtained.
