Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Arakchi made important statements to state television following his contacts in Damascus and Ankara.
Speaking after the visits that addressed the latest developments in Syria, Arakchi said, "During my visit to Syria, we discussed the latest developments in detail, especially the terrorist attacks targeting Aleppo. I conveyed Tehran's firm and clear message of support for the Syrian army and state to President Assad. Just as the Syrian state stood by us during the Iraq War in the Saddam era, we will stand by the Syrian state today."
"WE HAVE QUITE A FEW COMMON POINTS"
Referring to his visit to Turkey, Arakchi stated that they have always been in close cooperation and contact with Turkey on regional issues, saying, "We have as many common points as we have differences on regional issues. We agree with Turkey that Syria should not become a base for terrorist organizations. We also held discussions to prevent Syria from being dragged back into a civil war. We decided to continue these contacts and maintain our cooperation. In this context, we also agreed to advance the Astana process."
Arakchi emphasized the importance of the ongoing Astana process between Iran, Russia, and Turkey, stating, "Next week, on Saturday or Sunday, we will hold the Astana Summit at the level of Foreign Ministers between Iran, Turkey, and Russia in Doha."
HE HAD MET WITH ASSAD
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Arakchi visited Damascus on December 1, after Aleppo fell under the control of regime opponents, to convey a message of support to the Syrian government. During the visit, Iran's firm support for the preservation of Syria's territorial integrity and stability was emphasized. During his visit to Ankara on December 2, Arakchi stated that the only solution to the Syrian crisis is the Astana process and expressed that the discussions need to be revitalized.
The first meeting of the Astana process, which was initiated in 2017 under the guarantee of Turkey, Iran, and Russia to find a solution to the Syrian crisis, was held on January 23, 2017. The 22nd meeting in the Astana format was held on November 11-12.
It was announced that the 23rd round of Astana talks between Russia, Turkey, and Iran is planned to take place in the first half of 2025.
