A 55-year-old individual in Greece has been taken into custody for allegedly storing the body of his 90-year-old father, who passed away about two and a half years ago, in a freezer in the basement of an unused hotel in order to continue receiving his father's pension. Police have stated that there is no suspicion of murder in the case, while legal proceedings have been initiated against the suspect on charges of fraud and making misleading statements.
The incident that emerged in Greece topped the country's agenda. Police took action following a report that the 90-year-old retired teacher had not been seen for a long time.
Teams found the elderly man's body in a freezer in the basement of a disused family-owned hotel in the village of Mystras, near the city of Sparta on the Peloponnese peninsula.
TO CONTINUE RECEIVING HIS RETIREMENT PENSION
It was reported that the 55-year-old suspect taken into custody confessed that his father had died of natural causes about two and a half years ago and that he had placed the body in a freezer in order to continue receiving his pension.
Residents, meanwhile, stated that they had not seen the retired teacher for at least four years.
LEGAL PROCEEDINGS INITIATED AGAINST HIM
In a statement about the incident, police said the 90-year-old retired teacher died of natural causes and there was no suspicion of murder.
Legal proceedings were initiated against the suspect on charges of "fraud," "making misleading statements," and "violating firearms laws" due to the presence of an air gun in his home.
CAUSE OF DEATH TO BE CLARIFIED BY AUTOPSY
Authorities announced that the exact cause of the elderly man's death will be determined after an autopsy examination.
