In the Soma district of Manisa, 70-year-old Ayşe Çobanlar, who presented with complaints of abdominal pain, had over 20,000 stones removed from her gallbladder at Soma State Hospital. The stones, which the doctors could not count, were determined to number over 20,000 through a count conducted using artificial intelligence.
Seventy-year-old Ayşe Çobanlar, who went to the hospital with complaints of abdominal pain in the Soma district of Manisa, was examined by general surgery specialist Opr. Dr. Muhammet Burak Koyuncu, who detected stones that had fallen into the patient's main bile duct and severe inflammation in the imaging.
After the necessary treatment, the patient was taken into emergency surgery, where thousands of stones of various sizes were removed from her gallbladder. The woman, who was kept under observation in the hospital after the surgery, was discharged after regaining her health.
"WE COULDN'T COUNT, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE DETECTED OVER 20,000 STONES" Koyuncu evaluated the case as a situation that is quite rare for both patients and healthcare workers and considered it noteworthy.
Koyuncu stated, "First of all, our patient had heard about our hospital and us. We had previously operated on her husband here with a successful operation. Later, due to severe pain, she came to us, and we immediately admitted her to the service. In the imaging taken, we saw that stones had fallen into the main bile duct and that she was experiencing severe inflammation. We provided the necessary treatment and took her into emergency surgery. We successfully completed the cholecystectomy operation using the laparoscopic method. When we opened the gallbladder, there were a very large number of stones, ranging in size from 2 to 3 millimeters. We couldn't count them, to be honest, we made an estimate with artificial intelligence. It detected that there were over 20,000 stones. The important thing was to remove these stones from the gallbladder without perforating it into the abdomen. We successfully achieved this. Everything went well. We are currently on the first day post-op. Our patient is happy, we are happy. It is truly a source of pride for us, our patients, and our citizens to perform such rare cases in Soma," he said.
THE PATIENT COULDN'T BELIEVE THE NUMBER OF STONES REMOVED "I went to the doctor several times in Bergama, but I didn't get a diagnosis. My pains became very frequent. Since my wife is a pharmacy assistant, she had to give me injections every day. We called our doctor, Fırat Bey, and explained the situation. He asked us to come immediately. We were admitted through the emergency department. They provided the necessary treatments. They performed the procedures. They operated on me. They saved me from this situation," she said, thanking Opr. Dr. Muhammet Burak Koyuncu and the Soma State Hospital team.
"THIS IS A RECORD" After visiting his patient post-surgery, Opr. Dr. Muhammet Burak Koyuncu told Ayşe Çobanlar that she holds a record, stating, "A lot of stones came out, just from the gallbladder. Over 20,000 stones came out. This is a record. It's actually yours. It could be a very bad record, but thank goodness. Thank goodness it ended very cleanly and healthily," he said.
