Health Minister Memişoğlu: The fertility rate in Turkey should be increased.

13.11.2024 14:19

The Minister of Health, Kemal Memişoğlu, stated that the fertility rate in Turkey has decreased from 5.1 in the 1970s to 1.5 today, saying, "In this situation, the family and the fertility rate need to be increased."

The first meeting of the Family Protection and Empowerment Coordination Board was held at the Presidential Complex, hosted by the Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş, with the participation of Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç, Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya, Minister of Health Kemal Memişoğlu, and President of Religious Affairs Ali Erbaş.

"UNFORTUNATELY, THE FERTILITY RATE HAS DROPPED TO 1.5"

Speaking at the meeting, Minister Memişoğlu stated that strengthening the family structure in Turkey is a duty for everyone, saying, "Especially with the shrinking of the family due to urbanization and changing work methods, and unfortunately the decline in the fertility rate, it is necessary to raise the family and fertility rate. While the fertility rate in Turkey was 5.1 in the 1970s, it has unfortunately dropped to 1.5 today. This threatens both the future of society and the family structure. In this regard, our ministry has prepared and implemented an action plan, especially for maternal education and normal birth," he stated.

"THE FAMILY STRUCTURE MUST BE PROTECTED"

Minister Memişoğlu noted that with the increased accessibility of social media, the number of external influences on the family has increased and controllability has decreased, emphasizing the need to protect the family structure. He stated that they aim to strengthen the family through activities carried out at Health Life Centers operating in 269 locations across Turkey, saying, "We believe that this board will be very strategic for the better upbringing of future generations. We will provide all kinds of support as a ministry for activities that will develop and strengthen our future, our family, and our society."
