The bodies of 112 Palestinians who lost their lives in bombardments carried out by the Israeli army in 2023 in Gaza's Sabra neighborhood have begun to be recovered from under the rubble and buried, following months of search efforts. While the Gaza Civil Defense Directorate announced that 157 missing people have still not been reached, the United Nations reported that July was the period with the highest number of fatalities in Gaza this year.
The bodies of 112 people from the Abu Sharia and Al-Hasayine families, who lost their lives in the bombardments carried out by the Israeli army in November 2023 in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza, were recovered from under the rubble after lengthy search efforts.
After the completion of efforts that had been disrupted for months due to Israeli attacks and the severe humanitarian conditions in the region, the bodies were gathered together. The remains, wrapped in Palestinian flags, began to be laid to rest amid the tears of their relatives.
112 BODIES RECOVERED FROM THE RUBBLE, INCLUDING 40 CHILDREN AND 38 WOMEN
The Gaza Civil Defense Directorate announced that teams reached the bodies and remains of 112 people after a search effort lasting approximately two weeks and totaling 136 hours.
Among the recovered bodies are 40 children, 38 women, and 7 disabled individuals. Before the funeral ceremony, the bodies were laid side by side in an area created among the destroyed buildings in Gaza City. Relatives placed flowers on the coffins wrapped in Palestinian flags.
"FAMILIES HAD TAKEN SHELTER IN THE SAME BUILDINGS"
Yusuf Abu Sharia, a member of the Abu Sharia family who survived the bombardment, recounted that the attacks targeted three different buildings.
Stating that after the first building was hit, the families took shelter in the second building where their relatives were located, Abu Sharia said that the second building was also targeted shortly after. Expressing that the families then gathered in the third building, Abu Sharia noted that the final attack was extremely severe and everyone in the building was left under the rubble.
NO NEWS STILL FROM 157 PEOPLE
Muhammad Abu Dan, the official in charge of the search efforts, announced that the bodies of 157 people missing in the attacks have not yet been reached.
Yusuf Abu Sharia also said that some family members were torn apart due to the intensity of the bombardment, while no trace remained of others.
UN: JULY WAS THE DEADLIEST PERIOD OF THE YEAR
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that more than 150 people lost their lives in attacks carried out throughout July in Gaza.
OCHA noted that this figure is the highest monthly death toll recorded since the beginning of the year. The statement expressed that most of the attacks took place in camps in the southern and western parts of Gaza, where approximately 2.1 million Palestinians are hosted. It was also reported that 25 more civilians were killed in attacks carried out in the last week of July.
