METEOROLOGY HAD ISSUED A YELLOW CODE WARNING
The General Directorate of Meteorology had included Istanbul in the scope of a yellow-code warning for Tuesday, October 27. In the warning, it was reported that precipitation would be strong especially in the morning hours and very strong in places in the northern districts of the city. Across Marmara, the northerly wind was expected to strengthen and at times turn into a short-term storm at a speed of 50-70 kilometers per hour.
The warning called for caution and taking precautions against flash floods, flooding, lightning, strong winds, and possible disruptions in transportation.
ROADS AND UNDERPASSES WERE COVERED WITH WATER
After the warnings, the precipitation that started at night increased its effect as the hours progressed. In the early morning hours, avenues and streets turned into lakes in Tuzla and Pendik, the districts that received the most rainfall on the Anatolian Side. At some flooded points, vehicles were stranded in the water.
VEHICLE STALLED IN UNDERPASS
The underpass in Pendik’s Çamçeşme Neighborhood also filled with water due to the precipitation. The vehicle of Cengiz Bektaş, who set out to take his daughter to university, stalled in the water while trying to pass through the underpass. Bektaş, who was stranded with his daughter, got out of the vehicle with the help of those around. Bektaş called a tow truck to get his vehicle out of the water.
“WE BARELY SAVED OUR LIVES”
Bektaş, who experienced difficult moments, said, “While I was passing in the morning, everyone including the service minibuses was passing. While I was passing too, the car suddenly stalled. We barely saved our lives. I was taking my daughter to university in the morning. They helped and got us out of here. I called the tow truck, I’m waiting for it.”
PRECIPITATION EXPECTED TO CONTINUE
Precipitation is expected to continue its effect during the day as well.
