Balıkesir University (BAÜN) Edremit Vocational School Olive Growing and Olive Processing Technology Program Lecturer Oleologist Dr. Mücahit Kıvrak shared the important points to consider when buying olive oil. Oleologist Kıvrak stated, "No one sells early harvest cold-pressed olive oils in a soda bottle under the sun at the market. Those oils are valuable."
OLIVE OIL FRAUD HAS A LONG HISTORY
In his statement, BAÜN Edremit Vocational School Olive Growing and Olive Processing Technology Program Lecturer Oleologist Dr. Mücahit Kıvrak emphasized that imitation and adulteration of olive oil have been occurring in Turkey for many years, and it is very difficult for consumers to understand imitation and adulterated products.
PAY ATTENTION TO THE SMELL AND TASTE!
Kıvrak said, "Fake olive oils can be easily recognized by their smell and taste. They cannot find a fruity aroma in fake olive oil. They should definitely think that oils with a plastic paint smell are definitely something else."
COLOR CAN BE DECEPTIVE
Kıvrak emphasized that those who imitate and adulterate have also improved themselves with the developing technology in recent years, stating, "They add olive oil aroma, they add chlorophyll at this point; therefore, relying on color can deceive them as well."
"IT SHOULD LEAVE A BITTERNESS IN THE MOUTH AND A BURNING SENSATION IN THE THROAT"
Kıvrak listed the important points to consider when buying olive oil as follows: It should not have an oily paint smell. It should not be bought from roadside vendors. It should not be bought from market places. One should not be deceived by its color. Food coloring is added for color. It should smell like grass and clover, and it should leave a bitterness in the mouth and a burning sensation in the throat. Geographically marked products should be preferred. Products purchased from online markets should definitely be checked through the district agricultural and trade chamber. It should not be forgotten that there is no inspection in online markets. If there are analyses related to the product to be purchased, they should be requested."
THE PRICE SHOULD NOT BE TOO LOW
"If the price of olive oil is below the stock market prices, it is likely that these oils are fake. Stock market prices are wholesale prices. The consumer price is formed by adding transportation, labor, packaging, labeling, and taxes. Additionally, the wholesale price varies according to quality. No one sells early harvest cold-pressed olive oils in a soda bottle under the sun at the market. Those oils are valuable. Not every seller in neighborhood markets is an olive oil producer. We can understand fake oil through chemical and sensory analysis. If you call a company selling products online or through social media and say that you want to come and buy it and meet face to face, those selling fake oil without a sales location will not meet with you."
