The 33rd edition of the world's largest sports event, the Olympic Games, has started. The opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games, hosted by the capital of France, Paris, is taking place on the Seine River for the first time in history, outside of a traditional stadium. OPENING CEREMONY TAKING PLACE OUTSIDE OF A STADIUM FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORYThe opening ceremony of the games, in which a total of 10,500 athletes from 204 countries will compete, started at 20:30 (GMT+3). Boats carrying the athlete delegations depart from under the Austerlitz Bridge and pass along the Seine River to the point where the Eiffel Tower is located, covering a distance of over 6 kilometers until the Iena Bridge. The parade route includes cultural presentations and views of Paris' iconic structures. Approximately 300,000 people are present at the opening ceremony, which is being attended by numerous guests from the world of politics, sports, and art. The 2024 Paris Olympic Games will last for 17 days and end on August 11. ATHLETES TO COMPETE IN 48 DISCIPLINES ACROSS 32 SPORTSAt the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, athletes will compete in 48 disciplines across 32 sports. The Paris 2024 Games, which will take place in a total of 34 different venues, will award medals in 329 categories. While the karate and baseball disciplines, which were included in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, have been removed from the program, breakdancing has been included in the Olympics for the first time in Paris 2024. The competitions in Paris 2024 will include athletics, shooting, badminton, basketball (3x3 basketball, basketball), equestrian (dressage, show jumping, eventing), cycling (BMX freestyle, BMX racing, mountain biking, road, track), boxing, breakdancing, gymnastics (artistic, rhythmic, trampoline), fencing, football, wrestling (Greco-Roman, freestyle), golf, weightlifting, handball, hockey, judo, canoeing (slalom, sprint), skateboarding, rowing, table tennis, modern pentathlon, rugby, water sports (swimming, marathon swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming), surfing, archery, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, climbing, volleyball (beach volleyball, volleyball), and sailing. 102 ATHLETES REPRESENTING TURKEYA total of 102 athletes, 54 women and 47 men, will represent Turkey at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in 18 different sports. Turkey will participate with 16 athletes in athletics, 11 in wrestling, 8 each in sailing, judo, boxing, and swimming, 7 in shooting, 5 each in taekwondo and gymnastics, 4 in archery, 2 each in table tennis, badminton, cycling, weightlifting, and rowing, and 1 each in fencing, modern pentathlon, basketball, and canoeing. Only the Turkish National Women's Volleyball Team (13) will compete in team sports on behalf of Turkey. BUSENAZ SÜRMENELİ AND METE GAZOZ CARRYING THE TURKISH FLAGIn the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Turkish flag is being carried by national boxer Busenaz Sürmeneli and national archer Mete Gazoz. National athletes Busenaz Sürmeneli and Mete Gazoz, who won gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics, are at the forefront of the delegation in the opening ceremony. Turkey is passing through in the 191st position in the parade. PARIS HOSTS THE GAMES FOR THE THIRD TIME IN 100 YEARSThe Olympic Games, which have been held since 1896, are being organized in the capital of France, Paris, for the third time. Out of the 29 Olympic Games held since the start of the modern Olympics in 1896, 16 were held in Europe, 6 in North America, 4 in Asia, 2 in Australia, and 1 in South America. Olympic Games named after the city where they were held have been organized in a total of 23 cities in 19 countries. Paris, where the 1900 and 1924 Olympic Games were held, is hosting this event for the third time after 100 years. With this, Paris has caught up with London, which has the title of hosting the Olympics the most times with 3 (1908, 1948, and 2012). 36 REFUGEE ATHLETES TO COMPETEAt the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Refugee Olympic Team will include 36 athletes. The IOC Refugee Olympic Team, consisting of independent Olympic athletes, will compete for medals in 12 disciplines: swimming, athletics, badminton, boxing, breakdancing, canoeing, cycling, judo, shooting, taekwondo, weightlifting, and wrestling. The IOC Refugee Olympic Team, which also participated in the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics, will compete in the Olympic Games for the third time. RUSSIAN AND BELARUSIAN ATHLETES TO COMPETE AS NEUTRALSThe International Olympic Committee has announced that Russian and Belarusian athletes can compete at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games as "neutral athletes," and the use of Russian and Belarusian flags, emblems, and anthems will not be allowed. Neutral Russian and Belarusian athletes will be required to meet all the rules applicable to other athletes. No officials from both countries' governments will be invited to Paris for the Games and will not be accredited. Athletes who actively support the war with Ukraine will not be allowed to participate in Paris 2024. EQUAL REPRESENTATION OF FEMALE AND MALE ATHLETESParis 2024 will be the first Olympic Games in history to achieve gender equality. Female and male athletes will participate equally in all sports at the Olympics. Female athletes first competed in the Olympics in 1900 at the Paris Olympic Games. PARTS OF THE EIFFEL TOWER USED IN THE MEDALSThe athletes who win the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will wear an original piece from the city's symbol, the Eiffel Tower, on their chests. The iron pieces taken during the renovation of the Eiffel Tower were also used in the medals prepared for the Olympics. These pieces were placed in the middle of the medals in a hexagonal shape. The medals, produced by the French mint, were designed by the jewelry company Chaumet. A total of 5,084 medals will be distributed at the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympic Games.
