The hacking of 120,000 IP cameras in South Korea has turned into a major scandal. It has been revealed that the captured private footage was sold online for money, and it was noted that the security vulnerabilities in the same camera models, which are widely used in Turkey, were exploited in the attacks. Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.

A major privacy crisis has emerged in South Korea as thousands of homes and businesses have had their security cameras compromised. Individuals who hacked IP cameras sold the sexually explicit images they obtained online for money. Four suspects have been arrested as part of the investigation.

HACKED THROUGH SIMPLE PASSWORDS

The police stated that the attackers accessed systems by exploiting security vulnerabilities and weak passwords in IP camera models that are also widely used in Turkey. It was noted that the four arrested suspects acted independently rather than together.

HIGH RISK IN CHEAP SECURITY SYSTEMS

IP cameras, preferred for monitoring homes, workplaces, and especially children and pets, are vulnerable to cyber attacks due to their connection to the internet. Their lower cost increases the usage of these devices.

120,000 CAMERAS COMPROMISED

Among the hacked cameras are not only private residences but also gyms and a women's health clinic. According to information reported by the BBC, one of the attackers gained access to 63,000 cameras, obtained 545 sexually explicit images, and sold them for cryptocurrency worth $12,235.

IMAGES SOLD FOR VIRTUAL ASSETS

Another suspect reportedly infiltrated 70,000 cameras and offered 648 videos for sale. The police stated that two suspects were responsible for 62% of the videos on a website where illegal camera footage was shared last year.

BUYERS ALSO UNDER INVESTIGATION

Three individuals identified as having purchased the videos have also been detained. It was announced that procedures have been initiated to shut down the aforementioned website.

WARNING TO VICTIMS: CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS

Authorities stated that individuals whose images were compromised have been contacted and warned to urgently change their camera passwords.
