Hundreds Lost German Citizenship

16.04.2014 16:33

315 young people have so far lost their German citizenship because of the controversial obligation for children of immigrants.

315 young people lost their German citizenship since 2013 in the controversial law that governs children of immigrants in Germany who only have single citizenship rights, according to a statement by the German Interior Ministry.

Last week, the German Cabinet accepted the draft law that children of immigrants born in Germany will be eligible to apply for dual citizenship. An approval by the Federal Parliament on the draft law is expected.

Under the current system children of immigrants have to decide whether to give up their original nationality in order to obtain German citizenship.

The new draft will allow young people to have dual citizenship if they were born in Germany and lived here for at least eight years or attended school for six years until their 21st birthday.

Volker Beck, sitting member of parliament for the opposition Green Party, criticized the inadequate proposal arguing that it was only an extension of the current system, and underlined that statistical surveys on this issue were missing.

The current system primarily affects Turks living in Germany. There are more than two million people of Turkish origin residing in Germany. - Berlin
