Identical Twin's Skin Graft Saves French Burns Victim

23.11.2017 17:13

33 year old man had received 95 percent burns in workplace accident.

In a world-first, a 33-year-old French man with burns to 95 percent of his body had his life saved thanks to a skin graft from his identical twin brother, the Saint-Louis Hospital in Paris, where the operation was performed, revealed on Thursday.

It is the first time a skin transplant between twins was performed on such large area of the body, the hospital said in a statement.

'Franck', who is back home and recovering, suffered the burns in a work accident in September 2016. The chances of his survival were almost zero due to the extent of the burns.

He endured around 12 operations over four-and-a-half months and received the skin graft from his identical twin Eric's skull, back and thighs on three interventions.

The first was seven days after his injuries, the second after 11 days and a third intervention 44 days later.

"We have been always close but now we are more fused and more welded," Franck told French broadcaster BFMTV.

The doctors explained Franck's body did not reject the graft as the donor and recipient are genetically identical. -
