The world, shaken by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, is facing many new outbreaks, including monkeypox and SARS. The bird flu (H5N1) virus, which causes outbreaks when it infects poultry and has not been expected to cause death until now, has claimed a life in the USA.
FIRST DEATH FROM BIRD FLU CONFIRMED
A 66-year-old man has been recorded as the first person to die from bird flu in Louisiana, one of the southern states of the USA. Louisiana health officials confirmed the death caused by the H5N1 virus.
HAS ANOTHER CASE BEEN DETECTED?
The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) announced that no other cases or human-to-human transmission had been detected. LDH attempted to calm the panicking public by stating that the risk of bird flu spreading among humans is very low and that this death is exceptional.
STRUCK TURKEY IN 2005
On the other hand, the bird flu (H5N1) virus was first seen in Turkey in 2005. Despite effective quarantine and culling efforts to control the virus, poultry deaths continue to occasionally make headlines.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry recently reported that a case of bird flu was found in an egg production facility in the Meram district of Konya.
