A person pretending to pray in a mosque in Karaköy, Istanbul, stole a pair of shoes worth 6,000 TL belonging to a citizen. The moments of the theft were captured by security cameras, and the suspect, who was caught by police teams, was arrested.
STOLE SHOES WORTH 6,000 TL
The incident occurred on Thursday, January 2, around 15:45 in a mosque located in the Bereketzade neighborhood of Karaköy. According to the information obtained, Tolga Kaçar, who came to the mosque during the afternoon hours, placed his shoes in the locker and began to pray. At that moment, Yusuf A., who entered the mosque and started praying in front of the shoe rack, stole the shoes worth 6,000 TL belonging to Kaçar after the people around him left and exited the mosque.
FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE SLIPPERS HE WORE IN THE MOSQUE
After finishing his prayer, Tolga Kaçar could not find his shoes when he wanted to leave the mosque. Upon this, he reviewed the security camera footage with the mosque staff and saw that his shoes had been stolen. He went to the police station wearing the slippers he had on in the mosque and filed a complaint.
TEAMS CAUGHT HIM
The Beyoğlu Public Order Bureau teams, who examined the security camera footage, identified the suspect as Yusuf A., who has 10 records for similar crimes. The suspect was detained in Kasımpaşa, and the shoes he stole and sold were found and returned to their owner.
"I TOOK IT BECAUSE IT WAS A BETTER SHOE THAN MINE"
In his statement at the police station, the suspect Yusuf A. reportedly said, "I took it because it was a better shoe than mine." After completing the procedures, the suspect was referred to the courthouse and was arrested by the court for the crime of 'open theft' and sent to prison.
"HE REMEMBERS THE NICE SHOES"
Speaking about the incident, Tolga Kaçar said, "Two days ago, I went to the mosque on Regaip Kandil. When we started to pray, this guy came and pretended to pray. He was praying specifically in the area where the shoe rack is, not entering inside. While pretending to pray there, he turns around, selects the shoes, and remembers the nice shoes. Then, when the environment is suitable, he takes the shoes and leaves. He specifically takes nice shoes that he can sell. This is the third time this has happened to me. The friends at the police station helped and caught him. They also found our shoes and returned them. I thank them all very much," he said.
