Treasure hunters, who set out to dig illegally in Isparta with the dream of becoming rich, resorted to an unimaginable method. Four suspects wearing orange vests belonging to municipal personnel began to dig the pavement with the help of a construction machine in front of Kadir Bey Mosque on 155th Street in Karaağaç Neighborhood around 21:30. The suspects digging the ground introduced themselves as municipal personnel to the citizens who approached them. ILLEGAL DIGGING REVEALED BY CITIZENS' ATTENTIONThe excavation caused damage to the underground electricity line and natural gas pipe after a while, leading nearby residents to suspect the digging and report it. In response, a large number of police, municipal guards, and personnel from natural gas and electricity distribution companies were dispatched to the scene. The teams determined that the four individuals were digging illegally while dressed as municipal personnel. THE ESCAPING SUSPECT WAS CAPTURED BY THE POLICE CHIEFOne of the suspects escaped while three were caught at the scene. Acting Provincial Police Chief Volkan Güneş captured the fleeing suspect while heading to the scene. The moments when Güneş noticed the suspect, got out of the vehicle, and stopped him were captured on security cameras. The footage shows Güneş getting out of his vehicle, stopping the suspect walking on the pavement, and handing him over to the police teams by holding his arm. The teams seized a pickaxe and a shovel found in a sack during their searches at the scene. A FIGURED AND RELIEVED ROCK WAS FOUND IN THE PITPolice teams surrounding the area with a security cordon kept watch throughout the night. In the morning inspections, a rock with figures and reliefs was found in the dug pit. Expert personnel from the Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism were directed to the area. After the teams' examination, the excavation site was closed by the Isparta Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. A decision will be made after investigations on whether the pit, which was filled with soil by an excavator for the purpose of protecting the rock, will be reopened. "WE SUSPECTED THEM FOR DIGGING THE PAVEMENT HASTILY"Metin Yiğit, who noticed the illegal digging and reported it, said, "We asked the official at the mosque. They said, 'We are from the municipality, there is a water leak here.' We said, 'Where is the water leak? Show us.' They said, 'It was here, like this and that.' We sat back at the pastry shop. We followed them to see what they would do. They started digging with the excavator. There were two people on each side of the street constantly talking on the phone. We called the municipal guards, and they came. The municipal guard asked, 'What are you doing?' They replied, 'We came for a water leak.' The municipal guard asked, 'Who gave you permission?' and requested their IDs. The police took them to the station. We suspected that the excavator did not belong to the municipality. We suspected them for hastily starting to dig the pavement." he said. SUSPECTS AT THE COURTBased on the statements of the suspects taken to the police department, one more suspect was detained. An investigation was initiated against İ.A., H.T., Y.G., H.D.C., and Ş.C. for "smuggling of historical artifacts" and "damaging public property." They were referred to the courthouse after their procedures at the police station.
