The proposal prepared by the far-right Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, the major partner of the right-wing coalition government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, to classify surrogacy, which is currently illegal in the country, as a "universal crime," has completed its approval process in parliament today, which lasted over 1.5 years. The bill, which was first accepted in the lower house of parliament, the Chamber of Deputies, on July 26, 2023, was also voted on in the Senate today. In the vote held in the 200-seat Senate General Assembly, the proposal to classify surrogacy as a universal crime in Italy was accepted with 84 "yes" votes against 58 "no" votes, and it has become law. OPPONENTS DESCRIBE THE DECISION AS MEDIEVALIt is stated that the purpose of this bill is to prevent Italians from traveling abroad for surrogacy, as it has been illegal in Italy since 2004. With the new law, Italians who resort to surrogacy in different countries will face up to 2 years in prison and fines of up to 1 million euros. The left-wing parties and activists in the opposition who voted "no" in the Senate describe the proposal that became law today as "medieval" and "unconstitutional," and they were opposing it.
