The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change delivered 4,602 housing units to disaster victims across the city following the 6.6 magnitude earthquake in Izmir on October 30, 2020.

In the earthquake that occurred 23 kilometers off the coast of Seferihisar Doğanbey Neighborhood, 8 buildings in the Bayraklı district were completely destroyed, and 117 people lost their lives. AFAD, the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department, gendarmerie and police search and rescue teams, as well as search and rescue teams from non-governmental organizations, worked in the rubble in the districts of Bayraklı and Bornova, which were most affected by the earthquake.



DETAILED DAMAGE ASSESSMENT WAS CONDUCTED



Teams from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change conducted damage assessment work with 1,500 technical personnel across Izmir after the search and rescue operations. As a result of their inspections in 213,762 buildings across the city, they decided that 99 of them needed to be demolished urgently, identified 632 buildings as severely damaged, 580 as moderately damaged, and 7,768 as slightly damaged. The buildings that were decided to be urgently demolished were quickly demolished by AFAD teams.



4,602 RESIDENCES DELIVERED IN 4 YEARS



In the 7 regions where the 8 buildings collapsed in the earthquake, TOKİ started construction, while buildings also began to rise in the 375-hectare area next to the Bayraklı City Hospital, which was declared a reserve area. The first residences in the reserve area were delivered to the rightful owners in a ceremony attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the first year after the earthquake. With the completion of two large housing projects, a total of 4,602 residences were delivered to earthquake victims in the 4 years since the earthquake.



"THEY CONTINUE TO LIVE SAFELY IN THEIR HOMES"



TOKİ Implementation Department Head Emrah Bıyıkoğlu recalled that work began quickly after the earthquake in Izmir. Stating that they held the tender for a total of 1,404 residences in 7 phases in the city center of Bayraklı, which was most affected by the earthquake, Bıyıkoğlu said, "We delivered the residences before a year was up. At the same time, we completed the construction of 289 workplaces in the center of Bayraklı and delivered them to the rightful owners."



Bıyıkoğlu also recalled that work in the reserve area next to the Bayraklı City Hospital was completed quickly. He explained that they held the tender for 3,657 residences in 8 phases in the region, and concluded his remarks as follows: "We delivered 3,198 of these residences. We will deliver the remaining residences starting next week. Here, we also built 68 workplaces, a kindergarten, a middle school, a high school, and 2 mosques, delivering social facilities to the rightful owners. We also brought natural gas, electricity, and water to the general infrastructure here. Our earthquake-affected citizens continue to live safely in their homes. When we visited the rightful owners after the earthquake, they said they did not feel any tremors from the recent earthquakes."
