After the local elections on March 31, the AK Party, which did not achieve the desired result and fell to the position of the second party, continues the process of change that began with President Erdoğan's instructions. While there is excitement for the congress within the party, especially in Istanbul, there has been curiosity about who the provincial and district heads will be. OSMAN NURİ KABAKTEPE SAID "I AM NOT HERE" Osman Nuri Kabaktepe, who is held responsible for the failure in Istanbul, announced that he would not be a candidate in the congress planned for February. In his statement regarding the issue, Kabaktepe said, "Our AK Party continues to be the address of change, dynamism, and movement; it continues to establish the cadres that will build the Century of Turkey during this congress process. I will not be a candidate for the Istanbul Provincial Chairmanship in our 8th Ordinary Provincial Congress, which we will hold on February 8. I congratulate our president, who will be elected in the new term, in advance. I will continue to be by our President's side, serving our party, everywhere and at all times," he stated. ABDULLAH ÖZDEMİR WILL TAKE THE SEAT After Kabaktepe announced that he would not be a candidate, it is now seen as certain that the new Istanbul provincial chairman of the AK Party will be Abdullah Özdemir, the Mayor of Bağcılar. CHP Istanbul Provincial Chairman Özgür Çelik also stated in his announcement, "After Bayram Bey and Osman Bey, Abdullah Bey will be the 3rd Provincial Chairman in 5 years. I wish the new provincial chairman of the AK Party all the best," he expressed. HIS LIFE CHANGED WITH A RESIGNATION Abdullah Özdemir was elected as the Mayor of Bağcılar on April 15, 2022, through a vote held in the Bağcılar Municipality Council following the resignation of the previous Mayor Lokman Çağrıcı. After taking office, Özdemir drew attention with his performance and ran for re-election in the local elections on March 31, 2024, receiving nearly 56% of the votes and being re-elected as mayor.
